Responding to Wright: Architects Design for the Guggenheim

Since its opening on October 21, 1959, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building has inspired generations of visitors as a unique “temple of spirit” where radical art and architecture meet. In 2019, the museum was designated part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as one of eight Frank Lloyd Wright structures in the United States recognized for their outstanding contribution to cultural heritage. 60 years after its realization, the Guggenheim is honored to receive this internationally esteemed designation, which asserts the exceptional and universal value of Wright’s masterpiece. Join us in celebrating these milestones by attending this special conversation on architecture and exhibition design.

Responding to Wright: Architects Design for the Guggenheim
Throughout the Guggenheim’s history, distinguished architects have interpreted and engaged the museum’s rotunda. For the 60th anniversary, three of those architects, Lise Anne Couture, Hani Rashid, and Meejin Yoon, discuss their bold site-specific exhibition design interventions, which amplified the singularity of Wright’s architectural icon. A catalyst for transformational experiences, the building mandates custom fabrication and exhibition design for every show. Moderated by Ashley Mendelsohn, Assistant Curator of Architecture and Digital Initiatives, this conversation will consider the spectrum of design possibilities the building engenders.
